Cadet Programs
Through Civil Air Patrol's Cadet Program, young people develop leadership skills, investigate the fundamentals of aerospace science, acquire the habit of exercising regularly, solidify their character, and participate in exciting hands-on activities that prepare them to become responsible citizens.
Youth between the ages of 12-18 may join the CAP Cadet Program and remain in cadet status until they turn 21. Middle school students may join before turning 12, if their school participates in the CAP School Program.
Cadet Chain of Command Structure
Civil Air Patrol (CAP) youth are involved in practical leadership training as part of their progression in the cadet program. As such, the cadets model thier Chain of Command after the Air Force and CAP Chain of Commands.
These assigned cadets reports to the Deputy Commander for Cadets (in a composite squadron) or the Squadron Commander in the following order:
- Cadet Commander
- Cadet Flight Commander
- Cadet Flight Sergeant
- Cadet Element Leader
Cadet Drill & Ceremonies
As part of their leadership education, cadets participate in drill and ceremonies. Drill is an excellent way to promote teamwork, build discipline, and develop an appreciation for Air Force traditions.
Leadership for the 21st Century
This two-volume text is used by CAP cadets to study the art of leadership. For details on how the leadership laboratory is implemented in the CAP Cadet Program, see CAPR 52-16, Cadet Program Management.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT begins by welcoming new members and providing them with tools for training. Updated with a fresh, smart look, the "newmember packets" issued to cadets and senior members will be packaged in a durable, zippered 3-ring binder.
Inside, new members will find information and resources to help them start training and serving.
The "new member packet" redesign
includes a CD-ROM loaded with electronic
versions of CAP regulations, forms, promotional
videos, and other products. Cadets will receive
another new feature, a "Top Ten Ways to Get
More From CAP" wallet card.
Additionally, mini-posters illustrating how to wear the uniform properly and recognize grade insignia will help the new members get off to a good start in their CAP training.
Leadership and aerospace textbooks are included in the cadets' "new member packet." The six modules of Aerospace Dimensions, a text designed for group study, are provided in hard copy. Leadership: 2000 and Beyond, a self-study text, is included on CD-ROM.
